10 SEO Blog Post Publishing Steps that Most Bloggers Forget

10 SEO Blog Post Publishing Steps that Most Bloggers Forget
Table of Contents

    1. Keyword Research
    2. Fine-Tuning the Headline
    3. Post Slug
    4. Images
    5. Relevant Videos
    6. Subheads
    7. Interlinking
    8. External Linking
    9. Meta Data
    10. Call to Action

1. Keyword Research

Before I write a single word, I figure out if it’s something that people are asking about. And if they are, I want to know if the internet is already saturated with that type of content.

To figure this out, I do two things:

   1. Google’s Keyword Tool – I look up the words I believe people would search for to find the post I plan on writing.
  2.  Google – I google those keywords to see the actual competition.

2. Fine-Tuning the Headline:
For title tag SEO, your goal is to place the keyword as near to the front of the headline as possible:

Top 10 Motivational YouTube Videos for Entrepreneurs
20 Great Google Chrome Extensions for Online Entrepreneurs
20 Best Designed Pricing Comparison Tables

3. Post Slug

The post slug is what shows up after the domain for every post or page.

When you type a headline, WordPress generates the post slug by placing every word in the headline into the slug. This clutters it up with lots of small words.

4. Images

We all know that images grab your attention, break up the content, and supplement your ideas. But they also add great SEO benefits, as long as you follow these steps:

   1. Save your images as [keyword-phrase.png] before you upload them to your site.
   2. Add alt text as [keyword phrase].
   3. Add title tag as [keyword phrase].

5. Relevant Videos

Google understands that adding a video to a blog post makes it a more complete resource. If they haven’t already boosting blog posts with videos, they will eventually.

If blogging is a big portion of your business, start making videos for your posts, upload them to your channel, and embed them in the actual post.

6. Subheads

Similar to images, subheadings break up the content and make blog posts easier to read. They also have big-time SEO benefits.

When a search engine robot hits a page, it reads the headline/title tag first. Then it reads the H2, H3, and H4 tags.

7. Interlinking
Another important step that most people forget is interlinking between posts.

Before you publish a new post, read through it and try to find two-three opportunities to naturally link back to relevant posts on your blog.

8. External Linking

Also, look for opportunities to link to other bloggers. The SEO benefits of external linking are unclear..

9. Meta Data

Whether or not Google still looks at meta keywords is up for debate, but the meta description is definitely still used.

In a search result, your meta description often shows up as the little blurb beneath the blue link. In writing your meta description, you need to keep three things in mind:

   1. It needs to be fewer than 155 characters so Google will display the whole description.
   2. It needs to include your keywords because Google bolds them in search results.
   3. It should be an actual sentence from the post because people look for that sentence once they arrive.

10. Call to Action

The final step is the call-to-action. As with any piece of marketing material, a blog post should be designed to get someone to do something.

Here are a few popular calls to action:
Comment – You can encourage people to comment by ending the post with a thought-provoking question   simply asking them to let you know what they think.
Share – “If you liked this post, tweet it out.” Implement – I believe the best result of any blog post is for a reader to take your advice and implement it.

20 SEO Terms You Should Know

1. SEM: Stands for Search Engine Marketing, and as the name implies it involves marketing services or products via search engines. SEM is divided into two main pillars: SEO and PPC. SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, and it is the practice of optimizing websites to make their pages appear in the organic search results. PPC stands for Pay-Per-Click, and it is the practice of purchasing clicks from search engines. The clicks come from sponsored listings in the search results.

2. Backlink: Also called inlink or simply link, it is an hyperlink on another website pointing back to your own website. Backlinks are important for SEO fields because they affect directly the PageRank of any web page, influencing its search rankings.

3. PageRank: PageRank is an algorithm that Google uses to estimate the relative important of pages around the web. The basic idea behind the algorithm is the fact that a link from page A to page B can be seen as a vote of trust from page A to page B. The higher the number of links (weighted to their value) to a page, therefore, the higher the probability that such page is important.

4. Linkbait: A linkbait is a piece of web content published on a website or blog with the goal of attracting as many backlinks as possible (in order to improve one’s search rankings). Usually it’s a written piece, but it can also be a video, a picture, a quiz or anything else. A classic example of linkbait are the “Top 10″ lists that tend to become popular on social bookmarking sites.

5. Link farm. A link farm is a group of websites where every website links to every other website, with the purpose of artificially increasing the PageRank of all the sites in the farm. This practice was effective in the early days of search engines, but today they are seeing as a spamming technique (and thus can get you penalized).

6. Anchor text: The anchor text of a backlink is the text that is clickable on the web page. Having keyword rich anchor texts help with SEO knowledge because Google will associate these keywords with the content of your website. If you have a weight loss blog, for instance, it would help your search rankings if some of your backlinks had “weight loss” as their anchor texts.

7. NoFollow: The nofollow is a link attribute used by website owners to signal to Google that they don’t endorse the website they are linking to. This can happen either when the link is created by the users themselves (e.g., blog comments), or when the link was paid for (e.g., sponsors and advertisers). When Google sees the nofollow attribute it will basically not count that link for the PageRank and search algorithms.

8. Link Sculpting: By using the nofollow attribute strategically webmasters were able to channel the flow of PageRank within their websites, thus increasing the search rankings of desired pages. This practice is no longer effective as Google recently change how it handles the nofollow attribute.

9. Title Tag: The title tag is literally the title of a web page, and it’s one of the most important factors inside Google’s search algorithm. Ideally your title tag should be unique and contain the main keywords of your page. You can see the title tag of any web page on top of the browser while navigating it.

10. Meta Tags: Like the title tag, meta tags are used to give search engines more information regarding the content of your pages. The meta tags are placed inside the HEAD section of your HTML code, and thus are not visible to human visitors.

11. Search Algorithm: Google’s search algorithm is used to find the most relevant web pages for any search query. The algorithm considers over 200 factors (according to Google itself), including the PageRank value, the title tag, the meta tags, the content of the website, the age of the domain and so on.

12. SERP: Stands for Search Engine Results Page. It’s basically the page you’ll get when you search for a specific keyword on Google or on other search engines. The amount of search traffic your website will receive depends on the rankings it will have inside the SERPs.

13. Sandbox: Google basically has a separate index, the sandbox, where it places all newly discovered websites. When websites are on the sandbox, they won’t appear in the search results for normal search queries. Once Google verifies that the website is legitimate, it will move it out of the sandbox and into the main index.

14. Keyword Density: To find the keyword density of any particular page you just need to divide the number of times that keyword is used by the total number of words in the page. Keyword density used to be an important SEO factor, as the early algorithms placed a heavy emphasis on it. This is not the case anymore.

15. Keyword Stuffing: Since keyword density was an important factor on the early search algorithms, webmasters started to game the system by artificially inflating the keyword density inside their websites. This is called keyword stuffing. These days this practice won’t help you, and it can also get you penalized.

16. Cloaking. This technique involves making the same web page show different content to search engines and to human visitors. The purpose is to get the page ranked for specific keywords, and then use the incoming traffic to promote unrelated products or services. This practice is considering spamming and can get you penalized (if not banned) on most search engines.

17. Web Crawler: Also called search bot or spider, it’s a computer program that browses the web on behalf of search engines, trying to discover new links and new pages. This is the first step on the indexation process.

18. Duplicate Content: Duplicate content generally refers to substantive blocks of content within or across domains that either completely match other content or are appreciably similar. You should avoid having duplicate content on your website because it can get you penalized.

19. Canonical URL: Canonicalization is a process for converting data that has more than one possible representation into a “standard” canonical representation. A canonical URL, therefore, is the standard URL for accessing a specific page within your website. For instance, the canonical version of your domain might be instead of

20. Robots.txt: This is nothing more than a file, placed in the root of the domain, that is used to inform search bots about the structure of the website. For instance, via the robots.txt file it’s possible to block specific search robots and to restrict the access to specific folders of section inside the website.

10 Common Link Building Problems

1. Article Directories

Article directories were hit in the initial Penguin release on April 24, 2012. If you are currently adding article directory links, then stop the program right away.

In addition, if you have some links that resulted from article directories, then work on getting them removed. If you can't get them removed, then use the Google Disavow Tool to request that they be ignored by Google.

2. Low-Quality Directories

There isn't clear evidence that low-quality directories were explicitly punished in a Penguin release as yet, but it does not really matter. The right policy here is clear. Participate in the major directories: Yahoo Directory, DMOZ, Best of the Web, and

3. Low Relevance Guest Posts

Guest posting on sites that you are truly proud of is a great idea. But this can be overdone too. For example, if the post is not relevant to your site, or the site is not relevant to your post, don't do it.

4. Low Relevance/Accuracy Info graphics
This is a popular strategy many people use to promote their sites. Infographics are cool looking, and they can communicate certain types of information very effectively, which is why they are popular with users and publishers.

5. Paid Guest Posts

To me, paid guest posts are one of the more obvious ones, but a lot of people still do this. One big flag for this is a site that has a significant number of incoming links from posts that have rich anchor text embedded in the middle of the text.

6. Anchor Text

This one may upset some people. As I predicted in "SEO Revelations for 2013", I believe Google will take action (or more action) against sites that have too much rich anchor text in their backlink profile. You could argue that their EMD update was a step in that direction, but there is much more they can do here.

7. Doorway Pages

An oldie but goodie! These are thin content pages/sites that exist only to capture search traffic and then to get people to go to another site (in this case the site with the penalty).

8. International Sites

I always chuckle when I see a site with lots of links from Polish sites where the page is written entirely in Polish and right in the middle somewhere is this rich anchor text phrases in English. Ouch. You might as well go to building 43 at Google wearing a sign with your URL on one side and the words "I am a spammer" on the other.

9. Blog Carnivals

Stated with an optimistic eye, blog carnivals are communities where people share content, some editorial review is, or isn't, provided by the person running the carnival, and other publishers can then come find articles for publishing on their site.

10. Poor Quality Content of Any Kind

You can argue about how this might be measured by a search engine. Here is a place where social media signals may add some real value as a signal.

Does your site, or articles you write, get social love? Or, do they get little attention at all? You could also look at the time on page type signals. Do people spend 2 minutes or more on the page, or do they stop by and run off right away?

The authorship initiative by Google is the start of an overt effort on their part to figure out who is publishing quality content. And, as I mentioned in my SEO Revelations article, they are already measuring and acting on time on site signals.

Search Engine Optimization

Search Engine Optimization

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is an exercise to promote websites on search engines result pages (SERP) for user oriented queries. As an example, a user looking to find an efficient web solutions partner in New Delhi for design & development of a website for his organization, will log on to Google, Yahoo, MSN etc. and type in a query pertaining to his requirements. The query can be anything like web design New Delhi. Once the query has been shot across, the search engine examines its database & throws results as a best fitting reply to the user query. Now there may be thousands of organizations in the same business, how does the search engine determine which one is the best suited? The answer to this lies in the SEO exercise.
Let us first determine how a search engine ranks a website on its result pages. Each Search Engine has web-crawler software which keeps crawling the internet and scanning websites. It may even be on this web page as you are viewing it!! This crawler scans the website for its code, content etc. and just as a teacher gives student marks, it gives websites marks based on hundreds of pre-defined parameters. It is the aggregate of these marks which actually determines the position of a website on the SERP.

How can one score the best on the search engines?

The SEO process allows avenues to play on with the search engine's ranking algorithm thereby allowing it to give the website best marks possible. There are two processes one can follow to achieve this-
·      Organic SEO i.e. process which search engines recognize to be honest and standardized.
·      Black Hat or the dishonest method of achieving rankings. Now one must remember that if one is smart, search engines are smarter! Therefore using black hat tricks can get a website banned on SERP's, if detected.
The safe & best approach ‘Organic SEO’ falls in best.
Organic SEO process is divided into 2 aspects- On-page Optimization and Off-page Optimization. Let us determine various exercises broadly coagulated within the organic process of search engine optimization.
Types of Seo?
Ø  Seo types are:
  1. On page.
  2. Off page.
This is the technical aspect of SEO exercise. Here the objective is to ensure that your website complies with all technical and architectural norms of search engine crawlers. This compliance relates to crawlability or accessibility of the crawler to all the pages of the website. A student’s note book not only has to be complete for the teacher to assess but also formatted as per teacher’s liking to impress the teacher!

This process includes basic exercises like:
v  Extensive keyword research
v  Landing page optimization.
v  Keyword density correction on the web-page.
v  Keywords inclusion in meta, title tags, anchor texts, alt etc.
v  Ensuring proper keyword density in the body text as per the inverted triangle rule.
v  Ensuring proper internal link structure.
v  Checking for code Vs text ratio.
v  Ensuring that outbound links from a page are not to a bad or unrelated neighbourhood.
v  URL optimization.
  v  Sitemap Generation.

How to Increase Your Blog’s Page Rank

How to Increase Your SEO Blog’s Page Rank :

About fell over when I checked this blog’s Page Rank some days ago. Goodness! It had moved from 0 to 1. I couldn’t believe my eyes. In fact, I had to confirm by checking at two other sites. It was the same story. But I still found it hard to believe, and I’ll explain why.

 1. Writing for readers rather than search engines:

Over time, I’ve realized that most posts that dominate search engine rankings and attract hundreds of backlinks are fact-filled, problem solving, and…long. So, I ensured that my posts were also long enough to give every detail the reader needs.

2. Deep linking:

When writing my posts, I always linked relevant parts of it to previously published  posts. Most bloggers apply this tactic. And you should have noticed it on most  blogs.

3. Outlinking:

Though this may sound counterintuitive, I started applying it since the time I learned, in this post by Neil Patel, that it works for SEO. What you knew is that you’ll boost your blog’s rankings by getting backlinks from other sites, right?

4. Adding images within posts:

So as not to make my posts appear as “dry blocks of text”, I try to add relevant images between them (though not all my posts have images).

5. Getting backlinks from other sites:

Personally, I think this is what played a giant role in the PR upgrade. As I publish posts on my blog, I tried getting backlinks to it from other blogs. I did this via two main techniques – guest posting and blog commenting.

Essential Off Page SEO Factors

Essential Off Page SEO Factors
In this issue of the Traffic Travis newsletter you'll learn about the essential off page SEO factors that will contribute to how well your website ranks in the search engines. While on-page SEO is a one-time thing, off-page SEO deals almost exclusively with building links to your site and is what will get you the most results over time.

Here's some of what we'll cover:

The number of inbound links to your site.
The quality of the links to your site.
The rate at which you should be buildling links.
How to deal with anchor text.

Understanding Google PageRank:

Before we get in too deep, it is important that you have an understanding of Google PageRank. Put simply, PageRank (PR) is a way that Google measures websites. It is based on a complex and evolving algorithm, but you don't need to worry about that.

Number of inbound links:

By far the biggest force behind boosting your search engine ratings is the number of other web pages that have links pointing to your website. According to Wikipedia, a hyperlink to a page counts as a vote of support for that page

Anchor Text To Specific Pages:

You want as many links to your web pages as possible to have anchor text that includes your keywords. This will help search engines correctly identify what your pages are about, and know which keywords they should be ranking for.

Quality of links:

Not all links have the same value. Quality matters.
The type of sites that are more valuable include:

High PR websites.
edu or .gov websites.
Authority sites in your niche. If you are unsure of what an authority site is, they are the bigger websites that tend to feature a lot in the search results for your chosen keywords (and related keywords).
